New Year, New You – Happy 2014 – Starter Tips

Hello from snowy Chicago!  Happy New Year all.   I hope everyone had a fun, safe and blissful start to their new year!

photo3 photo4

There is something magical about waking up to a new year with a blanket of snow.  Like everything is being cleaned.  We kept last night super low-key.  My sister and I went to the gym for a last minute end of the year sweat sesh followed by welches grape juice, Taboo and a sick hubby and needy little dude (he is all about Mama, Mama, Mama – in fact he won’t leave my lap/arms/sight, even now as he sits on my lap saying “mama, mama”).

photo

I’m not big on New Year resolutions but I do think it isn’t a bad time review goals, revamp a wardrobe, and double check where you are physically and mentally.  The Holidays can be a stressful time of year filled with too many processed foods (or not, and if not, good for you!) or cookies or days when you are like “I’d rather have hot chocolate and watch the Santa Clause with my son tonight instead of killing it at the gym” (guilty!!).

For all those who are trying to make 2014 a healthier year than 2013 whether it is purging unhealthy habits or relationships – good luck!  Keep me updated on your journey and build a strong foundation so that you don’t set yourself up for failure.  For those of you hitting the gym here are some tricks for keeping you on a path rather than over doing it and discouraging progress so early:

  1. Be realistic.  Don’t think you can go from not benching ANYTHING to benching a ridiculous amount of weight or not running to being able to run 4 miles without issue.  Your body will need some time to build up to these things so set little goals and listen to your body.  Nothing is worse then waking up on Jan. 2nd feeling like you were ran over by a Mac Truck.  Take it easy 😉 – your body can do amazing things – but pace yourself.
  2. Ask, ask, ask!  If you look at a machine/person lifting and are watching someone who looks fit fly through movements – don’t assume they are doing the machine/movement correctly.  Ask a trainer walking the floor if your form is correct THERE IS NO SHAME IN THIS.  You don’t want to start the year off with an injury, and I’m warning you now, just because that girl/dude has nice muscles doesn’t mean they are using the machine/free weights correctly and doing 20 incorrect movements at top speed with bad form is way less impressive (and stupid) than doing 3 correct perfect form moves.  Trust me, your injury-less body will thank you for the questions.
  3. Don’t feel intimidated at the gym.  This is easier said than done, but everyone starts somewhere.  Respect your journey for where it is.  You don’t have to be a size 0 to be healthy.
  4. Change takes time.  Just because your first week at the gym feels like a success does not mean it will show on the scale.  In fact, I’d throw the scale out.  Happiness is not tied to a number, it is tied to a feeling.  When you feel good, that is happiness.  Be thankful for what your body can do for you now, and know it is an amazing tool.
  5. Try new things!  Take classes.  Try TRX, Yoga, Pilates, spin, crossfit – weightlifting!  There are so many ways to stay in shape.  You don’t have to hate it.  You do not have to run because so many people run.  Hit a fun machine – the rower, a bike, the AMT, and don’t forget to get strength training in.  Take it outside too – get the family involved.  Take the dog for a fast walk in the snow, go ice skating, jump in the pool.  Like I said, change it up and try new things.  Find something you enjoy.  Fitness is a way of life – and it can be fun!  It doesn’t mean hitting the dreadmill and eating celery.
  6. Find a good blogs to read both fitness and food!  I love reading about other people’s journeys and what they do to stay fit.  The amazing thing is they are all different!  Everyone stays fit in different ways and nothing is more motivating then a good before and after picture! (Fitnessista.com is my fav!!!)
  7. Update the playlist.  Enough said.  Music is amazing – some of it can really push you through machines/cardio.
  8. Treat yourself to new workout gear!  Although there is nothing wrong with a cotton t-shirt and yoga pants.  I LOVE my tech gear.  Makes me feel fierce.  Honestly, hit a yoga or Pilates class cute gear?  Winning.  My favs include: lulu of course, under armor, nike, reebok and one of kind saying shirts that are all over the place “Keep calm, Ohm on”.  How awesome, and appropriate are my “Chase Snowflakes” socks?!photo2
  9. Give yourself a pat on the back!  You did it!  You started your fitness journey.  This is a lifestyle change you will have to commit to this for life.  Once you reach a goal weight, you still have to maintain and that takes work too!  You need to continue to eat clean, and hit the gym.

Good luck everyone! Stay safe, stay fit and eat clean.

Evan was a BLAST this year for Christmas.  Everything was “Wow” and “eeeee” when he was opening his gifts.  So much different from our sweet itty 6 month old last year:DSC_1006

Both perfection, in their own special way.  I feel so blessed.  – My wonderful husband let me go to a holiday yoga class at our local CorePower studio.  It was the perfect end to an amazing morning.  It was warm, filled with great energy and a great instructor – there isn’t anything else I could have asked for.

We spent the rest of the holiday with lots of family, ate too many cookies and enjoyed my mom’s awesome spread!  Cannolis, shrimpies, crab dip, Polish goodies – the works.

IMG_3472

We also went light hunting.  We LOVE Christmas lights and were able to see some really sweet displays in our neighborhood:

IMG_3482 IMG_3486 IMG_3487 IMG_3458

Finally, we cuddled with our sweet little dude.  He was so amazing, as always.  I am blown away by him, everyday.  The perfect gift to our family ❤

Hope your Christmas was amazing!  Back later with a New Years post! ❤

Twas the Day before Christmas

It is the day before Christmas and all through my house, not a thing is together not even my couch.  The Stockings aren’t hung, although the command hooks are bought. My hope is for St. Nick to put them up.

My child is covered in breakfast cereal, while Oso prances around begging for food; and hector in slippers and I in my lulu had just settled down to discuss what to do.

It is full swing ahead with all we have to do but I thought I’d check in with some things to do:

1.  Make it to a yoga class  to keep me sane.

2. Run around doing last minute shopping!  Every year I tell myself I’ll be better.  Honestly, I don’t know if I will ever be.  Most people are done but there are definately last minute things I must do.  Stopped at whole foods and bought some fun stocking stuffers:

IMG_3366 IMG_3367 IMG_3364

3. Drive around to see some Christmas lights.  Our neighborhood is always decked out so we like to drive around and see some pretty displays!

IMG_3354

4. Nom nom on some cookies as well as bake a last minute batch or two:

IMG_3375 IMG_33985. Take some Christmas-y family photos – or photos of Evan.

IMG_3405and enjoy some time with my favorite family peeps.

Oh – and go shopping for wrapping paper, tape, and bows!  *Sigh* my collection has gone missing. *sobs*

Happy Christmas Eve to all!  Hope you can get in some sweaty time!

A very [VERY] late Thanksgiving Update

This year I am thankful for so much – We celebrated in our new home for the first time… We came, we ate, we destroyed – and all were merry.  Please join me on my 20 things I’m thankful for/turkey day recap.  Ready. Go!:

1. Hector, Evan and Oso – My daily dudes.  I’m in a home with a bunch of boys and I love every second of it:

Our best family photo (minus Oso, can you imagine?)

Our best family photo (minus Oso, can you imagine?)

Ah, be still my heart.

Ah, be still my heart.

2. Family – Turkey day was spent with the people we love most!  The Villa’s and the Mattes’ unite! haha – We have such a fun family dynamic, I really am such a lucky girl:

family

3. Friends.  I honestly have hit the friend jackpot.  I’ve said it before and I cannot say it enough  – I have the best friends.  I love them, we can not talk for days, weeks but if I need to chat, they are there.  I have a good mix of friends and I’m so lucky for all of them.  I’d like to think they know that!  I’d go to the ends of the earth for them all and this year I added some special work friends.  I’m surrounded by awesome people.  Again, thankful, lucky girl right here.

4. Music – I LOVE Christmas music and it makes its way into our lives right around turkey day time. I love Pandora, itunes, and the good old fashion car radio… My workouts would never be as amazing they are without it. 😀

5. My job.

6. Coffee, green tea (and all my other teas, I’m the tea lady at work)

7. My yoga mats.  These things save my sanity.

8. My running shoes that haven’t been used nearly as much as they should.
9. My home – our first Thanksgiving here!

10.  Fresh flowers, fresh herbs.  Nothing is more homey than fluers and herbs.  I love that I’ve been able to sorta keep my herbs alive and use them in my awesome home cooked meals:

herbs fluers IMG_1420

11.  Food.  I’m thankful that we are able to provide food for our family and teach Evan healthy habits.  Turkey day here was filled with awesome ingredients.  Some indulgent treats and healthy eats.  Many fresh veggies and some awesome pies and fresh whipped cream:

12.  Grandma’s china and silver.  Hector and I never bought our own china and silver but my grandma gave me her sets and I’m so crazy thankful for these beautiful pieces that made their first appearance at our first thanksgiving here at this house, they were special to her dinners many many years ago and are being well loved and used once again:silver china

13.  Cranberry pomegranate sauce.  I literally made it twice (pictured above in the mason jar).  Soooooooooooooooooooooo yummy!

fav14.  My Camera.  Even though I’m in the market for a new one, I’m so grateful for the camera and all the memory cards I hoard. I cannot delete them and reuse, once they are full I buy a new one haha.  I’ve been able to capture so much with my camera and love playing with it.  I really should treat myself to a class.

15.  Our health.  I’m so blessed to have a healthy happy family.  I cannot thank God enough for that.

16.  The Train.  I LOVE never having to deal with traffic.  My train rides to work are short, sweet and awesome I don’t mind them one bit:

17. Instagram.  What?!  Without it I wouldn’t have the filtered pictures above.

18.  Aden and Anais blankets – This may be something strange to add but Evan loves these things and so do I the Dream blankets (below, but their swaddlers are amazing and he still loves those too!) are the best and will make a great gift.  I will always recommend these products!  They are awesome!!  Evan has been wrapped or has wrapped himself in one of these everyday of his life so far:
DSC_0040

19.  My husband.  I know that I mentioned him above but he means so much to me he deserves a double post.  He is the most genuine, loving, wonderful person I have ever met.  I’m so lucky that I get to share my whole life with him.  He is gentle, kind and thoughtful – charming, my opposite, my balance, my peace.  I love him with all that I have.

babydaddyDid I mention he is the most wonderful father?  Oh yeah, well he is.  Insert “heart eyes emogyi”

20.  Me.  Blogging and forcing myself to get memories down, holding myself accountable for eating clean, working out, being a good mom, employee, wife, daughter, sister and person.  Thanks for following our journey!

Winter Prep & a super late Halloween/Oct Recap (pretty much in pictures)

Yep, it has happened.  Chicago’s first snow dusting:

DSC_0858 DSC_0869

It is premature in my book, but totally typical of Chicago.  In our city, you cannot even begin to predict what is going to happen weather-wise.  This was taken almost two weeks ago and the following weekend we had 60 degree weather followed by severe thunder storms, go figure 😉  I feel lucky that we get to experience all the different seasons around here, but I don’t think I’d be too sad if I moved somewhere warm and sunny all the time.  My mood seems tied to the weather… But still – it makes me nuts that we were JUST enjoying warm/fallish weather and now I’m scrambling to get Evan some weather appropriate clothes:

DSC_0824 DSC_0821 DSC_0846 DSC_0775 DSC_0784

Anywho, the snow has put me into wintertime mode.  Hot chocolate, throw blankets, and pulling out/buying new Christmas decorations:

trees etree

Tar-jey is so dangerous… They had the CUTEST owl/vintage-y ornaments so naturally I had to make Evan his own mini tree above…  But really how cute are these:

owl

Target also has holiday scents out.  One of my favorite products had “Pine” scent so I snagged those too:

Love the pine scents... seriously obsessed

Time still seems to fly by at hyper speed.  I realized I’ve never blogged about Evan’s first birthday – which I still will.  I put in a TON of work for it and made decor that I’d love to share – so when I find the pictures I’ll blog about it 4 months late.  I’ve also not blogged about Halloween even though it did happen and our mini werewolf (of course the costume we LOVED he hated, so pictures in it were nearly impossible) hung out with his bff Jonathan:

Like I said, with winter on the way we are scrambling to get out decor and set up our casa with holiday cheer the first holiday season we are spending here.

Thanks for taking the ride with us!

Goebberts 2013

I cannot believe we are this close to Thanksgiving.  I feel like the second November hits it is like hyper speed to the end of the year then January and February and some of March are spent wishing the weather warm.  October was a busy month for us (well, what month isn’t?).. So I thought I’d share some highlights like Evan’s first trip to the pumpkin patch!  Last year we never made it happen with our 3 month old (bad parents, I know) but this year my parents and Hector, Evan and I stopped at Goebberts and it was a blast!

DSC_0014

PS.  I LOVE this stroller.  LOVE it. DSC_0029 DSC_0032 DSC_0034 DSC_0035 DSC_0048 DSC_0059 DSC_0068 DSC_0070 DSC_0077 DSC_0080 DSC_0088 DSC_0093 DSC_0094 DSC_0107

Evan loved lounging around in the pumpkins.  He would walk up to a series and just plop down and lean back ❤DSC_0330 DSC_0332 DSC_0339 DSC_0345 DSC_0352 DSC_0378 DSC_0386 DSC_0409 DSC_0412 DSC_0417 DSC_0432 DSC_0437 DSC_0449 DSC_0457 DSC_0484 DSC_0499

This place was perfect for kids with tons of things to do.  And a great pumpkin Patch! (with pumpkins ACTUALLY still on the vine 🙂 )

It was a perfect fall day spent with the people I love most.  We finished it off with terrible for us food and hot apple cider. Perfection.

Can’t wait for Auntie Colie to join us next year and maybe Auntie Joanna or Evan’s other Aunt Nicole… We can make a huge day of it.

Journey – Home Edition

The other day Evan and I went for a very long walk.  The weather was perfection and the fall leaves were breathtaking:

DSC_0878We walked to our favorite coffee house for a lunch date with my dear sister and on the way we walked past this house:

DSC_0748The house that started our house hunting journey.  Believe it or not it is in better shape than when we originally found it.  It was around the block from my mom’s house (an ideal location) and it needed so much TLC but it was priced so low that we felt like we could make it work!  It was the jump start we needed, that little push that put wheels in motion to buying our first home. I could not help but take pictures of it on our walk because we have come so far from the day we first looked at this home – a short sale late September 2012 just one short year ago.  I still remember sitting in the car with Evan while Hector ran around trying to peak in the windows (which have been replaced) and the excitement on his face that we might start this journey.

DSC_0743We ended up not even looking at the interior of our house because our Realtor looked at us and said many wise words,  “you have a 3 month old baby, you never know when this sale will go all the way through and the financing will be different if you need to put money into a home- that house needs a lot of work I’d hate for you to have unfinished projects as it is as is, lets look around.”  The house was a little too small too only two bed one bath and an unfinished basement.  She said she’d show us the house anyway but had a hard time scheduling the showing.  The rest is history, we only looked at houses ONE day. The day before I was done with maternity leave.  I swear it was just meant to be this house, we looked at a total of 3 houses that day and put our offer in same day and two days later we were under contract.

evan home buying

(the day Hector handed in our earnest money… Look how LITTLE my baby was!!)

Buying our home was a crazy wonderful experience and it is neat to look back and see how lucky we were with the whole process.  We had an amazing crew backing us up and it really was as seamless as it could have been.  My suggestion?  Hire a broker, attorney and Realtor it is so worth it.  Seriously.

I’m excited that someone has bought the house that started it all and started giving it some TLC.  I’m glad it is in the neighborhood I live in and I can watch the progress, funny how you tie memories to objects.  The day Evan and I went for that walk I seriously walked with him for 5 miles taking in just how blessed we are to be where we are.  How blessed I am to have a loving/kind/wonderful/handsome/etc. partner in Hector, the family I have, the son I have, the job I have and the home we share.   Here are some pictures of the literal little journey we took that day:

I look forward to updating you on our recent things… I have a feeling I might play catch up this weekend (four days long!).

Happy Saturday.  The sun is shining…

15 Months

Hello blog space.  I’m back with an update on my favorite little guy (FINALLY in big boy shoes):

Image

A week ago we had his 15 month appointment and it went splendid.  He is doing great, which I didn’t need the doctor to confirm but she did give us some stats:

He is 24lbs (75% tile)
32 inches tall (90% tile)
and his head is 19 inches around (90% tile)

Image

So he looks perfectly proportioned and like a long lean little dude.

I must say, he continues to melt my heart and amaze me each day.  All his phrases “thank you”, “Aw, Man”, “Go away”, “Get down, dog” and some favorite words “Hoc-key” “Cole” “MA MA”

Image

I cannot believe last year you were a snuggly little 3 month old:

ImageImage

Now you are a serious charmer.  A runner, a lover, and still a closet snuggler just when I need it:

Image

You never stop going, not until the minute you are down, unless you take that 3 perfect seconds to hug me tight.  Leaving you for work each day is the hardest thing on the planet.  Last week we spent each and everyday together and it was wonderful.  I grandma envy for sure.

I remember when you were an itty baby and I wanted you to stay that way forever, but seeing you grow up has been so amazing. You are so fun!  You are the happiest baby I have ever met.  You are the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen.  You LOVE giving kisses running to people for hugs and singing and sorta dancing.

You have taught me to absorb everything around me and have made me so much happier.  You have also taught me I was born to be a mother.  I cannot wait to bring home a sibling for you, you are going to be such a fantastic big brother one day and the next bebe is going to have to work really hard to wow us as much as you have.  You are so amazing and fill me with SO MUCH JOY.Image

Image

Side note:  I have been writing this blog since BEFORE 10/21… and just publishing it now.  And just because if I don’t publish it now, I feel I never will.

Weekend Recap – Fitness Fun.

So this weekend was nothing crazy spectakular (on the surface); but, it was exactly what I needed filled with Evan, workouts, house work and relaxing.  No fireworks, no parties… Just two calm days that were busy but for all the reasons I love.

I hit the mat with one of my favorite instructors, Lou:

IMG_1865 IMG_1866

I hit the pavement with a bright pink pair of well, running shoes:

IMG_1849I even hit the gym, not only for pool time with my little man but weight time with my arms, legs and back:

IMG_1876

It wouldn’t be complete without feeling nostalgic and doing a few jumpers, quiet a few mad that wonderful “swish” sound we all know and love.

It was a busy physical weekend that was finished with several miles with my two main weekend dudes, Oso and Evan.

IMG_1789Oh and not helping my obsession over getting myself a vitamix… Green smoothies:

On. The. Go.

Life has really been exactly the way it should be: completely nutzo but in the best way possible.  I mean I get to come home to this:

IMG_1828 IMG_1829My main men and well… Evan’s wild mane that I couldn’t love any more than I do.  He is still the light of our lives. ❤

The past week has been extremely busy.  Work, play, bed. That has been the routine and the weather is definitely changing.  I find myself layering and it reminds me a of a few things: well FALL of coure, new wardrobe, shopping and birthdays.

followed by a meltdown

New lulu from the hubby! ❤

I'm still not feeling the best, so don't mind my disheveled look lo;

I’m still not feeling the best, so don’t mind my disheveled look

(some love from last year) –

THis year I have a very different life.  New job, new home, new loves, a new happy grateful outlook on my life… Everything feels like it is right where it should be.

Today my life consisted of a run, a cuddle date, a coffee date, a swim date, a yoga date and a dinner date with two of the best parents in the world:

IMG_1850 IMG_1856 IMG_1859 IMG_1865 IMG_1866

Yoga with Lou was nothing short of amazing.  I really wanted to go to C2 because I wanted more of a workout but Hot Power Fusion hit the spot.  I focused on my intention (being more confident) and hit everything.  I also went on a very short run this morning and Evan clinged to me like no other in his freezing swim class.  We both walked out of there with purple lips and chattering teeth.

Also, how much am I loving my swiftly (above) and my practice freely tank?  Love. Them.

IMG_1582 IMG_1584 IMG_1585Family walks when I force Hector out of the house are a lot of fun too.  I mean look at these sunsets that are beautiful pictures that do not even SCRATCH the surface of just how amazing they really were.

I’m literally falling asleep writing this but just wanted to update on a few positive things. Synopsis:
